PowerConnect 2025: Gas key for district heating, important for power generation

One of the key challenges for Poland's energy transition is the decarbonisation of district heating. The well-developed district heating market is an asset, but its specificities also pose challenges. As part of the PowerConnect Energy Summit 2025 conference, Polska Spółka Gazownictwa co-organised a debate on the transformation of district heating.

Wojciech Wrochna started the panel by listing the gas-related investments Poland has made in recent years and questioned whether it would be possible or economically efficient to achieve the net zero target by 2050 without the use of gas. He also highlighted the benefits of using gas in peak or sub-peak capacity. - There is no longer any doubt that gas will be a transitional fuel in the energy transition for a long time to come, said Wojciech Wrochna. - Without gas in large district heating systems, I have my doubts whether we will be able to decarbonise this sector at all - added the Government Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure.

Szymon Paweł Moś, member of the board of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa, referred to the deputy minister's statement. - Gas is a bridge fuel. I am quite cautious when it comes to talking about gas as a permanent transition fuel. Not because I disagree with the term, but because it can distract us and, as a wise book says, 'do this and do not neglect that'. This means that we certainly need to move towards an energy transition, without looking for excuses, but I have the feeling that everyone in this room feels that this 'bridge' is going to be quite long, he said.

- The fact that gas is necessary for the transition is also stated in the Orlen Group's strategy. The document clearly shows that demand for the blue fuel will increase by around 30 per cent to 27 billion cubic metres by 2030. The customer structure will also change - professional customers will noticeably increase their market share. Our company intends to play an important role in this process, adds Szymon Paweł Moś.
