The second day of the 8th Congress of the Polish Gas Industry

Building a hydrogen economy and developing the gas industry is the issue that the panellists started on the second day of the 8th Congress of the Polish Gas Industry on 28 June.
Polska Spółka Gazownictwa participated in Panel IV, where the issues of system solutions for gas supplies were discussed. The session's topics mainly concerned new business models, directions of changes in the distribution system in Poland, financing of gas projects, market development and heating system modernisation.

On behalf of PSG, the discussion was attended by Jakub Kowalski, member of the Management Board of Operations, and Artur Cieślik, Vice-President of the Management Bboard of PGNiG, Adam Wawrzynowicz, Wawrzynowicz i Wspólnicy, Prof. Jerzy Stopa, AGH, Prof. Władysław Mielczarski, Łódź University of Technology, Henryk Mucha, President of the Management Board of PGNiG Obrót Detaliczny, Bogusław Regulski, Vice-President of the Polish Heating Chamber of Commerce, and Andrzej Rubczyński, Director of Heating Strategy, Forum Energii. The panel was moderated by Prof. Andrzej Osiadacz from the Warsaw University of Technology.

In the discussion on financing gas projects, Jakub Kowalski, a member of the Management Board, drew attention to the company's challenges regarding the existing grids. “We hope that the modernisation fund and the energy transformation fund will notice the need to expand the distribution grid. We have grids in which gas emergency services, in principle, have taken over the role of continuous service and are constantly removing breakdowns, and if we would still have to deal with the issue of methane emissions in a moment and try to curb this situation, and such obligations will be imposed on us, then the modernisation of the existing grids is another big and costly challenge for Polska Spółka Gazownictwa”.

The issues of the potential for connecting individual clients were also discussed. “In the final quarter of last year, we noticed a decline in interest among individual clients. The vast majority of individual customers are looking for solutions other than a connection to the gas network. Our challenge and main task for the coming years is heating and professional entities”.

At the end of the discussion, the topic of hydrogen was raised. “We have launched the first research project with one of the leaders in the energy sector in Poland, under which we will be preparing for the construction of the first water pipeline at any moment”, commented Jakub Kowalski, Board member.
