PSG: Legal changes needed for the development of biomethane distribution

On January 25-27, the 7th ENERGAS Technical and Scientific Conference 2023 was held in Andrychów. One of the topics of the conference was the development of the gas market in Poland in the context of the planned energy transition and the current geopolitical situation. The event was attended by the President of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa, Robert Więckowski.
Polska Spółka Gazownictwa is a modern company with long traditions, whose main mission is the supply of gas fuel in a continuous, safe manner and with respect for the environment. Poland's largest natural gas distributor recognises the current trends and opportunities that are emerging for the company. In the future, it also wants to actively build the Polish hydrogen economy and distribute other renewable gases such as biomethane.

“We have been working for a long time on making the adoption of this type of fuel gas possible, while, of course, maintaining the quality of the services we provide. In order for the renewable gas market to grow to its full potential, it is necessary to bring forward a long-term plan for the development of this sector. We need a transparent support system for biogas producers, while from the perspective of the distribution system operator, it would seem reasonable to revise the existing rules and adopt regulations defining mutual relations between biogas producers and gas grid operators, which would respond to the challenges of the energy transition,” said Robert Więckowski, President of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa.

Poland is one of the European countries with the largest potential for biomethane substrate production. According to the “Gas for Climate” report prepared in July 2022, the production will grow, reaching up to 12 billion cubic metres of biomethane in 2050.
