PSG CEO’s participation in the Polska Chemia Congress

Szymon Paweł Moś, CEO of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa, took part in an expert panel discussion entitled ‘Biomethane for industry – from potential to practical implementation’ during the 13th Polska Chemia Congress, organised by the Polish Chamber of Chemical Industry.
During the discussion, the PSG CEO outlined the Company’s outlook on the development of the biomethane market and PSG’s role in the energy transition: 

- For the past two years, we have been consistently taking steps to demonstrate to the market that injecting biomethane into the PSG network is not only possible but also affordable. Of course, I am speaking from the perspective of a distribution system operator, considering the tasks and role assigned to us both by energy legislation and by the strategy of the ORLEN Group, of which we are a member. “It is a fact that the PSG distribution network – comprising 215,000 km of gas pipelines – is ready for biomethane, a fuel that can be injected without the need for radical technological changes,” said the CEO. 

- In my view, biomethane could help industry not only to meet its climate targets, but also to serve as the energy source that builds our economy’s resilience. It is worth noting that biomethane is the renewable energy source that can be produced continuously and reliably from substrates available in Poland, regardless of the weather. It also constitutes a form of ‘local content’, as the use of Polish substrates is a key element in building a circular economy and strengthening independence from external sources. The new National Energy and Climate Plan (KPEiK) estimates the implementation and investment potential in this area at between 3.2 and 4.7 billion m³. Under the WEM scenario (With Existing Measures – taking into account measures already in place), domestic biomethane production in 2030 is forecast at around 0.5 billion m³, whilst under the WAM scenario, production is expected to reach around 1 billion m³, he pointed out. 

- PSG has developed solutions enabling investors to assess the potential of a location and the possibilities for connecting to the grid. We have a demand map, we have our biomethane advisers, and we have reorganised the Energy Transition Department. We understand this market and are a reliable partner for potential investors.

We are also involved in discussions regarding legislative changes that could streamline the implementation of investment projects. One of our proposals is to apply solutions similar to those already in place under the so-called ‘terminal special act’ to connections for biomethane plants,” he noted.

- We are constantly expanding our network. We are doing this in such a way that new investments increase the potential for connecting biomethane plants – I am thinking primarily of increasing the network’s capacity. On the other hand, we do not want our participation in the energy transition to result in an unfair tariff burden on end users. We are monitoring all potential changes and solutions in the market from this perspective. That is why, in order to finance our investments, we are drawing on external funding, such as from the FEnIKS programme,” he said. 

- Polska Spółka Gazownictwa has clear objectives: to distribute gas fuel reliably and safely, to connect biomethane plants and to inject biomethane into the network. We have 23 contracts in place, of which one has already been fulfilled, whilst 22 remain active. We have also issued around 500 connection conditions. This year, we expect another biomethane plant to be connected, although, as I often say, it takes two to tango, so much depends on potential producers and the solutions they have at their disposal. We are ready for biomethane,” concluded the CEO.

The Polish Chemistry Congress, organised by PIPC, is one of the most important events in the chemical industry in Poland, serving as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and discussion on key directions for the sector’s development, including the energy transition.
