PSG CEO at the 4th Energy Transition Congress
Szymon Paweł Moś, President of the Management Board of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa (PSG), took part in the 4th Energy Transition Congress, which focused on the key challenges facing the energy sector. This year’s edition of the event focused on the decarbonisation of the heating sector, the role of gas in stabilising renewable energy sources, and the energy transition in the broadest sense.
The CEO of PSG took part in the opening session of the Congress: ‘Decarbonisation of district heating – from gas to electrification’. In his speech, he referred to the role of the gas network operator in the transformation process and to the importance of support for the district heating sector:
- The decarbonisation of the heating sector is one of the priority tasks of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa (PSG) within the context of the energy transition. Not long ago, we took another step in this direction by establishing the Key Accounts and Innovation Department. Within this department, our advisers provide comprehensive, tailored support for the electricity and heating sectors at all stages of the connection process. At the same time, we are investing heavily in network development – we are implementing projects worth approximately PLN 1.2 billion, including with support from FEnIKS funds, which significantly increases connection capacity. We are seeing clear momentum in this process: last year we signed 52 contracts in this area, mainly in the second half of the year, and a further 12 in the first quarter of this year. Active participation in the energy transition, with a particular focus on the decarbonisation of the heating sector, is today – alongside our day-to-day distribution tasks – one of PSG’s key priorities and the second, strategic ‘pillar’ of our business.
The Congress also addressed the issue of preparing the infrastructure for connecting new, low-carbon gas sources, including biomethane. The CEO of PSG highlighted the measures the company is taking in this area:
- We are investing in the adaptation and development of existing infrastructure so that it is ready for the connection of biomethane plants and the distribution of biomethane to end users. We are already communicating our technological readiness – both in terms of the network and the investment process – as demonstrated, amongst other things, by our ‘Ready for Biomethane’ initiative. We have significantly strengthened our organisational capacity by establishing and developing a team of dedicated biomethane advisers who work individually with potential investors to define connection terms. We have also made modern tools available, including a network absorption capacity map showing the actual potential for biomethane uptake. The results are already visible – in less than two years we have signed 21 contracts, the first biomethane installation has been connected to our network, and further investments are currently underway,” emphasised the CEO.
PSG’s participation in the Energy Transition Congress provided an opportunity to present the perspective of a distribution system operator and to contribute to the debate on the future direction of the heating and energy sectors.
