Katowice to be heated by gas
Polska Spółka Gazownictwa has signed a connection agreement with Tauron Ciepło for the largest combined heat and power plant in Katowice, with a capacity of 28,000 m³/h.
Polska Spółka Gazownictwa has signed a connection agreement with Tauron Ciepło for the largest combined heat and power plant in Katowice, with a capacity of 28,000 m³/h. In April, a similar agreement was concluded concerning the connection of the heating plant in Tychy, with a capacity of 9,500 m³/h. The switch to gas by Silesian plants is part of the very intensive transformation currently taking place in the Polish heating sector.
For Polska Spółka Gazownictwa, this connection is closely linked to a project being carried out with EU funding under the FEnIKS programme: the construction of the high-pressure gas pipeline between Dąbrowa Górnicza Tworzeń and Bytom Łagiewniki, worth over 170 million zł. The completion of this project will improve the technical parameters of the gas being transmitted, significantly increase its availability in the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie conurbation, and enhance the security of supply continuity, whilst also serving as the source for the connection of the Tauron Ciepło combined heat and power plant in Katowice.
Previously, Polska Spółka Gazownictwa had already connected two other combined heat and power plants in the region, owned by Tauron Ciepło, to the gas network: the Bielsko Północ EC2 combined heat and power plant in Czechowice-Dziedzice and the Cieszyn combined heat and power plant.
For both the electricity and heating sectors, given the inevitable phase-out of coal, natural gas offers an opportunity to rapidly reduce emissions and stabilise the system, particularly in the context of the growing share of renewable energy sources.
- Over the past five years, we have completed 213 connections for such entities, with a connection capacity of approximately 230,000 m³/h and a declared annual volume of approximately 600 million m³ of gas. This process is accelerating rapidly, as evidenced by the fact that we have signed a further 68 contracts since 2025. In total, we are currently implementing 96 connection contracts with a target volume of nearly 1 billion m³ of transported gas per year,” says Jerzy Sitko, a member of the management board of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa.
According to experts, the future of the Polish heating sector will be based on a hybrid model, combining high-efficiency gas-fired cogeneration, renewable energy sources, energy and heat storage, and the gradual introduction of renewable fuels, including biomethane.
“This approach will simultaneously ensure security of supply, cost competitiveness and the achievement of climate targets,” concludes the member of the management board of Polska Spółka Gazownictwa.
